On Wednesday I went to view a potential rehearsal site at a local school. It was an easy enough location to find and a decent size. BUT it had 2 major drawbacks: Ok, it was about 5 miles from any major roads, not necessarily a problem, however, there was no access to restrooms or water fountains.
That means, that if someone needed to go potty, they'd have to drive 4 miles or more to the closest convenience store or fast food restaurant, use the facilities, then drive back. That's about a 10-15 minute round trip. Plus, no water. I couldn't do that to the members, even if the place was super inexpensive. If only there had been a fast food place or gas station on the corner or something! That really would have helped.
So, now gonna start hitting the private schools and churches in Austin. Parks and Rec charges a lot of money, and they're cutting budgets and removing weekend programs and staff, so that's out for now. I've inquired about a few empty buildings, but no responses so far. Although we have a facility or two that we can use, they're quite a distance from Austin, and with the price of gas, I think that's asking a lot to have people drive 25 miles out of town for a few hours then drive home, only to come out the next day. *sigh*
Luckily, I have a major fundraiser set up already. Selling concessions at University of Texas football games! It was a very simple process. I know someone who uses this as a fundraiser for another group, so I said "who do I contact?" got the info, and contacted the person. Within a week, we were set up! Now, we're sharing the spot with another local organization, and we're splitting the money so hopefully we'll be fairly successful with it and everyone will make out well.
Also been on the web and using social media tools to try and drum up interest. It's slow going so far, but got to get the name out and build interest! Hopefully it will work out well. Just keep putting in the hard work it will pay off, I know it will!
